Cusipata: An Adventure in the Peruvian Andes

Upon my arrival in Cusipata I knew immediately that I was about to live an unforgettable experience. In the heart of the Peruvian Andes, this beautiful small district welcomed me with its crystal clear rivers, imposing mountains and a landscape that makes it special. Although many see it as just a passing road to the famous Seven Colors Mountain, I soon discovered that Cusipata has much more to offer.

Connecting with Andean Nature

Exploring this wonderful place was a way to immerse myself in the majesty of the Andes. Its nature-filled trails, green valleys and the sound of the Urubamba River enveloped me in a sense of tranquility and adventure at the same time. I could not resist the idea of trekking and white water rafting and it was an experience that left me breathless.

I also found in Cusipata a place full of peace. Walking along its trails I could breathe fresh air full of exquisite plant smells, incomparable aromas away from the noise of the city. I felt that every step connected me with nature, having the possibility of seeing alpacas and vicuñas and even the Andean condor making a show in the clear sky making it a magical moment.

The road to the Mountain of Seven Colors

One of the reasons why Cusipata became popular is its proximity to Vinicunca, the famous Seven Colors Mountain. I chose this route instead of the traditional one from Pitumarca because it allows a shorter and less demanding access. Thanks to this I was able to enjoy the scenery and a less strenuous hike out of which I was able to appreciate the beauty of the landscape without having to rush.

One of the decisions I will not regret is having stayed in the community before the hike. I had shared experiences with the local families, learned about their traditions and customs and tasted their homemade food. It was an unforgettable experience that made my trip an adventure I will always remember.

Discovering the Flavors of Cusipata

When you travel you always get to try new flavors and in Cusipata you can taste the most exquisite dishes. The Andean trout, prepared in different ways, was my favorite, especially with potatoes and Andean corn. Another delicacy was the quinoa soup, which helped me recover energy after a day of walking.

As I walked through the local market, I let myself be carried away by the aromas and fresh smells of the region’s own products. Among the medicinal plants and handmade textiles, I felt that I saw the essence of Andean life reflected in every detail.

Andean Charming Lodging

Cusipata, despite all the adversities, still retains its essence of Andean village, where I found several lodging options. I opted for an ecological lodge overlooking the majestic mountains where I could rest in a quiet and warm atmosphere. In addition, many locals promote sustainable tourism, and it is in this way that I was able to contribute to the community.

Camping is a nice experience for the more adventurous. Spending a night with a starry sky in the Andes was an experience that remained engraved in my memory, I had never seen the milky way so clear and beautiful.

Tips to enjoy Cusipata to the fullest

If you want to visit Cusipata, here are some tips based on my experience.

  • Take adequate clothing: the weather changes suddenly and very quickly, so dressing in layers is the most advisable thing to do.
  • Acclimatize before: the altitude can affect you, so it is advisable to stay a day or two in Cusco before long treks.
  • Hydrate yourself: it is one of the most important, drinking coca tea helps with the altitude.
  • Respect the local culture and nature: keeping clean and being respectful of the customs of the community makes for an enriching and peaceful experience.
